English sparkling wine has experienced something of a revolution in recent times. If you had uttered the words “English Wine” not so long ago,  you would have been laughed off the vineyard, especially on the continent, but things are a little bit different these days.

We are not saying that our bubbly is ever going to take the place of a fine champagne of even the latest Prosecco, but a few new English sparkling wines have emerged onto the market of late which have got our attention. So much so in fact, that we have seen fit to profile the best so you can check them out for yourselves and let us know what you think.

If you are a regular here at the Octavian Journal then you will know that we are purveyors of all things fine wine and its storage, so you can rest assured that these bubblies are all of the very highest ilk. Enjoy!

The best English sparkling wine to try

Chapel Down – Kit’s Coty Coeur de Cuvee 2013

Starting with the best, the Chapel Down is surely fit for any occasion and would not be out of place at even the most sophisticated of dinners or parties. It’s effervescence is complemented quite stunningly by its depth and we think you will find this one will continue to age beautifully.

This English wine emanates from Chardonnay grapes and has undertones of nuts and apple which help it to bring the best out of a wide range of dishes. It’s aftertaste means that it can also be drunk in volume at events and as such, is being tipped to be the first English sparkler to be classed as “premium”. There aren’t too many bottles of this left though, so be sure to snap it up quickly should it sound like its down your street.

Ridgeview – Blanc de Blancs 2014

You will notice a chardonnay-esque theme throughout this article and that is because they tend to make the best bubblies. The Blanc de Blanc’s is probably the best example of that, with this delicate and fresh number which is absolutely perfect for your summer soiree or winter dinner party. This English sparkling wine is made in East Sussex by a great bunch called Ridgeview and is just one of a number of great wines coming out of their vineyard.

If you are on the hunt for an English wine which shows of zest, crispness and has a long seductive aftertaste, then we urge you to check out the Ridgeview. Order online here.

Louis Pommery – England Brut

So good is this English sparkling wine, that Pommery have pipped Tattinger to the post and added it to their selection; the very first champagne house to do so. Made in the Hattingly Valley in Hampshire, this brut uses red champagne grapes amongst others and the result is a golden, rich and tangy number. If you’re looking for a bubble for your wedding or event with a twist, then this probably the prudent choice.

Harvey Nichols – English Sparkling Brut

As individuals who live life on the sophisticated side, we are sure you have sampled Harvey Nichols’ own brand wines before, they are pretty spectacular aren’t they. Well you will be pleased to learn that their English bubbly is no different, having won a range of great reviews from revered critics. It is made for Harvey Nics by Digby Fine English using chardonnay grapes and a spot of pinot noir for good measure.

The secret to this one is probably the fact that the grapes are aged for two years, which gives it a natural acidity and depth. We probably don’t need to tell you where to buy this English wine, but you can however click here to learn a bit more.
